Why Do I Need a Prescription for My Incontinence Supplies?

Most health insurance plans require proof that your insurance-covered medical supplies, such as incontinence products, are medically necessary. To establish this, you need to have a prescription for your supplies.

Many Medicaid plans need further information about other medical conditions you may be experiencing, which could cause you to have incontinence, so you may need to show you have written documentation of what products are required to treat your unique condition.

Obtaining Your Prescription

While submitting our Eligibility Form to determine your coverage for free supplies as a first step to receive products is recommended, it’s important to know that Aeroflow will be requesting documentation from your healthcare provider before we ship your supplies, so your provider needs to be aware of your condition beforehand. This is because most insurance plans require clinical details and diagnosis information before approving your need for supplies.

Your provider may diagnose you with different types of incontinence based on your condition and medical history.

So, while we do encourage you to fill out our Eligibility Form to get approved for coverage, we also highly encourage you to visit your healthcare provider in person before and after working with Aeroflow

If you have not recently seen your healthcare provider and specifically discussed your incontinence, your provider may require an in-person visit with you regarding your incontinence, which could delay receiving your supplies from Aeroflow Urology by weeks or months. Visiting your healthcare provider and obtaining a diagnosis for your condition will greatly aid in the speed of getting your supplies.

After you've visited your provider, calling your doctor to let them know Aeroflow Urology’s Continence Care Team will be reaching out via fax for the prescription will also speed up the process of getting your products.

Updating Your Prescription

Based on your specific insurance plan, Aeroflow will require an updated prescription every 6 to 12 months (1x a year at minimum). That’s why it’s critical that you have at least 1 annual visit with your provider, even if you have no other new health issues.

Which Incontinence Supplies Are Covered by My Prescription?

The types of incontinence products that are covered by your prescription will depend on your specific insurance plan, your incontinence diagnosis (urinary incontinence, bowel incontinence, etc.), and your underlying medical condition or disability.

The following pediatric and adult incontinence items may be covered under your prescription and insurance plan:

  • Adult diapers (adult briefs).
  • Adult protective underwear (adult pull-ons).
  • Bladder control pads (incontinence pads).
  • Pediatric diapers.
  • Pediatric pull-ups.
  • Underpads (chux).

Why Do I Need a Prescription for My Incontinence Supplies?

Most insurance providers require proof that your incontinence products are medically necessary, which means you need to have a prescription for your supplies. Your Medicaid plan needs this information to show you have a qualifying diagnosis and written documentation of what products are required to treat your unique condition.

Even if you are an existing Aeroflow Urology customer, we are required to continue to show your insurance plan that your products are medically necessary with each month’s shipment of free supplies.

Renewing Your Prescription

Medicaid programs require that you have a new or updated prescription every 6 to 12 months (depending on your specific plan) to confirm that your incontinence supplies are still medically necessary.

It's also helpful to continue to discuss your incontinence symptoms with your healthcare provider over time so they're aware of any new or worsening symptoms and can adjust your medical history accordingly.

To keep your prescription updated, you’ll have to have an in-person visit with your healthcare provider 1x a year at minimum.

Aeroflow Urology will contact your healthcare provider to request a new prescription before your current one expires. If your provider requires you to come into their office, you'll receive a text, email, or phone call from Aeroflow Urology informing you that you need to make an appointment.

After your appointment, we'll ask your provider to fax us your new prescription and update it in our system. If you’d like to give your provider’s office the Aeroflow Urology fax number, use 1-800-831-2454.

Reordering Your Incontinence Supplies

As long as your prescription is up to date, you’ll be able to reorder your free incontinence products with Aeroflow Urology’s reordering portal via email or text.

However, if your prescription expires, we unfortunately won’t be able to continue sending your supplies, so it’s imperative that you visit your healthcare provider as often as your insurance requires.
